Dahlia Festival Season
If it’s one thing the Netherlands is known for, it’s for its flowers, and this doesn’t end after tulip season. In summer, from mid-August to mid-October, the dahlia flowers bloom and can be enjoyed by visitors through a variety of activities.
The primary cultivation of dahlias in the Netherlands is concentrated between Leiden and Haarlem. Dahlias are not only one of the oldest cultivated tuber flowers, they are also versatile and have many applications. Many of the most prominent flower growers, tuber growers have show gardens which can be visited during the Dutch flower festival.
The popularity of the dahlia is unprecedented. On an electric scooter or Dutch bicycle you can ride the 35-kilometer cycling route along the beach, through the dunes, dahlia fields and dahlia show gardens. Stop for a break at De Tulperij, a greenhouse that also has a lovely café. An ideal place for a cup of coffee with a captivating view of the dahlias. All varieties and colors of dahlias can also be admired in the gardens of Keukenhof Castle.
Flower Float Parade
Since the late nineteenth century, an annual parade of boats or floats decorated with flowers, fruit, vegetables and, in some cases, people in costumes take place. This is what we call a corso. Groups of friends and entire neighborhoods often spend months designing and preparing elaborate floats. The final days before the corso Dutch flower parade, the fresh products (flowers, fruit and vegetables) are added.
The flower parade ‘bloemencorso’ has been recognized by UNESCO as an ‘intangible cultural heritage of humanity’.
The floats, which can be up to 20 meters long and 10 meters high, are propelled by motor or pushed manually, during the competition which is the corso parade. It is a tremendous honor and appreciation to win the prize for creating the best float, judged best by a serious jury. Creating a sense of social cohesion and solidarity during work on the floats and dinners and drinks afterward is an important part of the corso. Join the locals on the street and admire the floats of the corso during the Dutch flower festival.
